Each day, when I wake up, I do my best to get ready quietly, in the dark, so as not to disturb my sleeping wife. Sometimes, I stumble out of the house with my shirt on inside out, backwards, or my hair a mess. It's not because I want to leave the house that way, but simply because I can't see clearly in the darkness.
In Psalm 27:1, the Lord is compared to the Psalmist's light. Just as the light of day illuminates the world and reveals its true details, the Lord's presence in our lives allows us to see the truth. He shines light on our sins and directs us towards eternal life. When we have a relationship with our Savior and understand right from wrong, nothing and no one can threaten us. The Lord is more powerful than anything in this world, and this understanding puts everything else into perspective.
With this understanding, we no longer need the approval of others. The power of our enemies, unfounded criticism, and office politics loses its effect on us.
