Welcome to the show. We are going to go through something brand new for us. This week, we are doing an interview, and I'm excited about it. I had a great time with Kevin McCracken, the Chief Operations Officer of Social Imprints, a social enterprise in San Francisco. We spent some time on the phone last week, and I recorded the interview. We'll cover that in the last half of the show.
This week has also been exciting. I got a chance to go to South Carolina and spend some time with Pierce Curran and his family. We talked a little bit about Scaly Adventures, and we’re going to broadcast that interview on June 15th. We’ll discuss how to use your company to serve the Great Commission during that interview. It’s really going to be exciting. Next week, we’ll have Ann Lazo of Scaly Adventures in the studio. She’s going to talk about how to set or reset our mission and vision statements, whether we’re in startup mode or ready to pivot our organization. We’ll cover that and some other announcements at the end of the show.
Today, we’re going to talk about integrating cultures and personalities in our companies. Last week, we discussed when ego drives the organization and practical ways to combat that desire for ego in our businesses. If you have questions or want to review the notes, they are on our website, holyprophetsradio.com. You can also email me at bradleyatleadingforachange.com.
Now, we’ll look at a new era in the Bible, called the Exile Era. After the Kingdom Era of King David, the Jewish nation was taken captive to Babylonia. It’s interesting how foreign cultures mixed, similar to what happens in business. When a company hires new people, sometimes the organizational culture changes. This happens because we relax our rules, don’t pay much attention, and are confused about how to move to the next level while maintaining the company culture.
If we look at what God was trying to do with Jeremiah, we see that he was called to speak to the Jewish people about their culture and warn them of their captivity in Babylonia. In Jeremiah 1:10, God’s direction to Jeremiah was threefold: to root out and pull down, to destroy and throw away, and to build and plant. This rooting out and pulling down refers to addressing root issues. Just like pulling weeds from the root so they don’t grow back, Jeremiah was called to address the cultural issues of the Jewish people, focusing on their belief in God and rejection of idols.
For business owners, it’s essential to examine core values and why we’ve developed our companies. We should revisit our Human Resources Manual and policies to ensure they align with our core values. Political correctness doesn’t necessarily equate to core values, and it’s okay to stick to your values. It’s about respecting one another, taking good care of each other, and adhering to Christian principles.
Destroy and throw away refers to evaluating employees' alignment with core values, mission, and vision statements. As Jack Welch said, “Hire slowly, fire quickly.” It’s crucial to have a core group of people who buy into your company’s values and mission to maintain its culture. Lastly, build and plant. This involves developing human capital, starting from the ground up, and hiring based on character traits that align with your business.
Now, we’ll move on to the interview with Kevin McCracken, COO of Social Imprints. Social Imprints is a full-service custom printer that provides higher-paying professional employment and job training to ex-offenders and recovering drug addicts. Kevin will share his story and insights on integrating different cultures within a company.
Kevin, welcome, and thanks for coming. Could you tell us about your background, where you came from, your struggles, and what motivated you to start your own business?
Kevin: Thank you. I appreciate you having me. I am an ex-offender and recovering drug addict myself. I haven't used any substance for almost 15 years. After county jail and rehab, I found a job in a non-profit organization that did job training. I started in a screen printing operation, which made sense to me given my baking background. Eventually, I became the sales manager and later took over running the company when my then-boss left, who is now my business partner at Social Imprints, Jeff Scheinbein.
We started Social Imprints to marry good social results with good business. We focus on higher-paying professional positions and job training in an office environment. Our goal is to provide sustainable employment in cities like San Francisco. Jeff and I launched the company just days before my daughter was born. It was a challenging time, but we were committed to making it work.
Our focus is on maintaining a culture of honesty and accountability. We support our employees through their struggles, whether it’s addiction, personal issues, or other challenges. We believe in creating a supportive environment where people feel valued and understood.
Bradley: Thank you, Kevin, for sharing your story. It’s inspiring to hear how you’ve integrated different cultures within your company and maintained a supportive environment. Your story will resonate with entrepreneurs and established business owners alike.
Next week, we’ll meet with Ann Lazo of Eagle Sores Consulting, a marketing consulting company in Asheville. We’ll discuss missions and visions, whether starting a company or pivoting it.
